We make connections between daily life, artists and universal experiences, and we wish the Waterfall could be the spectacle of the everyday.
Waterfall emphasizes on the instantaneous aesthetic experiences and small pulsations brought on by daily life. By presenting the details of these moments, the magazine reinforces readers’ own sensitivity and appreciation for the beauty of daily routine based on each individual’s own life experience.
Waterfall was founded in 2006, initially to facilitate the international exchange of contemporary art and culture. Serving as a platform for art, each issue of Waterfall is published online with artists’ submissions and cooperation according to the theme of each issue. The categories include photography, illustration, design, essays and novels. Behind the press relationships between Waterfall and the artists, are founded in letters exchanged back and forth or light conversation; to search and uncover the genuineness of artistic creation in real life. Aside, Waterfall shares random process in several different columns by turn, discussing a music type, a scenery, a cafe, a writer, or simply a song from time to time.
The magazine aims to release an issue per season. Making most of the internet, Waterfall is only to be read online instead of using PDF files. The advantage is allowing comments and the exchange of opinions from all readers, as well as extending its domain by linking relevant webpages. Waterfall sustains attention to art movements both at home and abroad. In addition to the main magazine, information regarding exhibitions, activities and seminars can also be found on the website.
Since the beginning of February 2007, Waterfall has extended from the press to actual exhibitions. Cooperating with NanHai Gallery, and collocating with the current issue “SOUNDS OFF,” the show involved both still works and performance by artists including Zeng Yu Qin and Yao Zhong Han. This action has opened up different frames of references to the online-based magazine, enacting different possibilities of interactions between readers of contemporary art.
From 2009, Waterfall has been seeking different forms to present contemporary visual creation. Seeing Taiwanese publishing circles lack of attention towards contemporary art and photography, also bearing deep affections brought on by actual printed leaves as carrier of knowledge; the next goal of Waterfall is the materialization of the online magazine, to be published twice a year. Besides the participation of Taiwanese artists by invitation, Waterfall embraces a selection of artworks from all over the world; introducing “Art Photography” and *“New Photography” to broaden the horizon of domestic art lovers. In near future, exhibitions are expected to be held again for readers to experience and appreciate the works in person. There will also be cooperative programs for young Taiwanese and overseas artists, to encourage and spark more unique art creations under the backdrop of various cultures and lives.
New photography is the trend of fine art photography in the past five years. Apart from installation photography and snapshoot, artists lay their attention on the details of transformation in daily life. The idea is to use the existing environment as subject without deliberating lightening and composition, and not to avoid the use of flash light. Thus unique beauty is revealed in the poetic gaze, which coincides with the attitude of Waterfall; to open our eyes in everyday lives, as well as our heart; and anyone will capture their own creative and artistic vision.
